ruby-install

Homebrew

ruby-install can also be installed with homebrew:

Or the absolute latest ruby-install can be installed from source:

Arch Linux

ruby-install is already included in the AUR:

yaourt -S ruby-install

Fedora Linux

ruby-install is available on Fedora Copr.

FreeBSD

There is a FreeBSD port of ruby-install which can be copied into the local ports tree.

Known Issues

Ruby

Rubies older than 1.9.3-p429 will not compile with Clang and require GCC >= 4.2. Normally, Linux and BSD systems will already have GCC installed. OS X users can install GCC via homebrew:

brew tap homebrew/versions
brew install gcc49

And run ruby-install again:

ruby-install ruby 2.4.0 -- CC=gcc-4.9

Rubinius

Rubinius 1.x and 2.0.x is not supported due to multiple bugs. Instead, please use Rubinius >= 2.1.x.

I was able to install 2.0.0 using the chruby setup.sh method, but then Rails kept throwing a ruby error, so I deleted it and am trying again using ruby-install and getting this error.

Allow installing MRI from a binary mirror

This downloads and installs a precompiled version of MRI from an RVM-compatible mirror if --binary is passed

The system auto-detection is a huge mess, and probably violating the style guide (several lines longer than 80 characters). It's mostly lifted from RVM's own system detection. I don't know if you want this somewhere else (if so, where?) or if you want me to shorten the number of supported systems, just let me know and I can modify.

As for the long lines, should I just "wrap" them?

This currently just fails if --binary is passed and no binary build was found, since that was the easiest to implement.

- Rubinius'es configure defaults to 3.2, but will 3.1 work for older distros (ex: Ubuntu 12.04LTS)?
Install Ruby >= 1.9.
- Ready, Set, ... recommends Ruby 2.0, but can we get away with Ruby 1.9? Most distros now provide ruby 1.9 packages. Fedora, Arch, Gentoo and Mavarick offer ruby 2.0.
Install Bundler
- Do we install via the package manager or via rubygems?
Run bundle install --gemfile="$SRC_DIR/$RUBY_SRC_DIR/Gemfile" in install_optional_deps or configure_ruby.

Add an --update option to download new versions and checksums from ruby-versions. These should be downloaded to either ~/.cache/ or /var/cache. The ruby-install code should determine which directory to use for the checksums/versions based on their timestamps.

Having trouble with OpenSSL 3 & MacPorts.

I'm not sure how to debug this further, but with OpenSSL 3 installed along side OpenSSL 1.1, I cannot install Ruby 2.7.5 (and probably others).

With only OpenSSL 1.1 installed, the following works:

ruby-install 2.7.5 -- --with-openssl-dir=/opt/local/libexec/openssl11/

However after installing OpenSSL 3, I get the following issue:

ruby-install 2.7.5 -- --with-openssl-dir=/opt/local/libexec/openssl11/

...

It looks like it's including both OpenSSL 3 and OpenSSL 1.1 which is probably why the problem happens.

Not sure why this is happening. Maybe there are multiple conflicting configure arguments being provided or autodetected?

Convert `dependencies.txt` files into `dependencies.sh` files

Replace the dependencies.txt file with shell script dependencies.sh files that better allow for dynamically defining package manager dependencies (ex: [email protected] vs. openssl@3 or jemalloc).

This is because Ruby is compiled with OpenSSL 1.1 instead of the latest OpenSSL 3. I had to reinstall Ruby with OpenSSL 3 to make it work:

ruby-install ruby 3.1.4 -- --with-openssl-dir=/opt/homebrew/opt/openssl@3

According to https://github.com/puma/puma/issues/2790#issuecomment-1009044847 OpenSSL 3 is fully supported since Ruby 3.1. Should ruby-install just use the latest OpenSSL by default?
