Upgrade to Ruby 3.0.2

Description

This is a tracking PR to see what we have to do to get the app running with Ruby 3.

Issues

  • [x] fix-db-schema-conflicts specifies a requirde Ruby version of '~> 2.0' in its Gemfile. The gem hasn't been updated in almost 2 years, so we may have to fork it but can try to submit a PR first. It's a dev dependency only.
  • [x] The katex gem (used for the katex Liquid tag) has '~> 2.3' as required Ruby version. It hasn't been updated since August 2019, so the same as above applies. Update: I opened a PR. The PR has now been merged, waiting for a new gem release.
  • [x] We had issues when updating the binding_of_caller gem but Ruby 3.0 support is only available in the newest version. We decided to remove this gem.
  • [x] We need a container build for Ruby 3.0.2 (cc @jdoss)

Feature Request or Task

As a user I want to be able to start typing with @ and have it deliver me a dropdown. This is expected behavior in this context.

This means that the box would have to become a content-editable div and the code should attach to each box. Making that part work could involve some yak shaving.

This should be written in Preact, and if think it makes sense to include a different library, let's discuss. We are critical of each dependency as we want to be efficient in this regard. It doesn't mean you definitely can't use a library, but let's just discuss the implications if you go that route.

The dropdown will use Elasticsearch, should search our user index

Definition of Done

This is done when all content boxes have a dropdown menu and the behavior works as expected on sites like GitHub and Twitter. Core team is here to help navigate the nuances of the issue.

Description

This PR aims to add a public indication of edited comments. This prevents gaslighting. It's helpful to stop situations where User A says something, then User B responds, User A modifies their comment so that User B’s response doesn’t make sense. Ideally, if someone edits their comments, we should publicly indicate it in the comment with the word "(edited)" appearing near the date of the comment.

Follow these steps to test the changes(These commands should be run via the terminal)

  • psql PracticalDeveloper_development
  • select id, LEFT(processed_html, 30) as processed_html, edited_at from comments order by id; (This returns a list of comments ordered by id. The id of the specific comment to be edited should be noted as it will go into the parenthesis in the next command)
  • update comments set edited_at = current_timestamp where id in (id of comment to be edited); (This should return the keyword UPDATED along with the number of comments that were updated
  • select id, LEFT(processed_html, 30) as processed_html, edited_at from comments order by id;
  • exit

Once the preview is loaded again, the edited span should be added to the comment that was just edited

Eslint errors on *.jsx files

Describe the bug This is a followup for https://github.com/thepracticaldev/dev.to/pull/2432

The *.jsx files inside app/javascript still have a lot of bad practices according to eslint. That's why when you edit these files, eslint will throw you about 650 errors during the husky hook before commit.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

Go into app/javascript and run eslint . --ext .jsx

Expected behavior There shouldn't be any eslint errors.

When you hover over .reaction-drawer and scroll through the comments, you can see that the like button is on top and even has a different z-index each time.

On the desktop, when you scroll down your page to see the comments, and, press the 3 dots for more share options there is a visual bug, where the reaction is above the menu.

Description

Sidekiq::Job is a new alias for Sidekiq::Worker as of Sidekiq 6.3.0. Use include Sidekiq::Job rather than include Sidekiq::Worker.

The term "worker" is too generic and overly confusing, used in several different contexts meaning different things. Many people call a Sidekiq process a "worker". Some people call the thread that executes jobs a "worker". This change brings Sidekiq closer to ActiveJob where your job classes extend ApplicationJob.

How to test this?

  1. Create an organisation
  2. Add 2-3 users with different names in that organisation
  3. Now create a post under the organisation.
  4. Visit dashboard, on right side see a drop-down with Personal, change it to your organisation.
  5. Click on 3-dots (overflow-icon) for the post that you created which will open the dropdown
  6. Now add these newly created users such that you add the user which you created in last as first followed by the other user.
  7. Visit this post and just above the title see that the name of the co-authors is mentioned in the exact same order that you mentioned while adding them.

Implement Hidden Tags Filter across all the home feeds

Dependant on Feed: Create a Filter Query that sets a foundation to extend the code for future filters.

As a user who has hidden tags, I would like posts with those tags to be hidden when I view the home feed pages

Describe the solution you’d like

We have recently implemented the "hide tags" functionality on the "Relevant" feed. We want to apply these changes as broadly as possible to all homefeeds meaning added support for both categories ("Explore" and "Following") and all options.

With the updated Filter Query that we'll implement, we'll be able to do this feasibly by hopefully adding one query to the filter query that will apply to all feeds.

Definition of Done

  • [ ] Ensure that our feed page filters out the hidden tags on all the permutations of the feed for signed in users. This change will mean updating the FilterTagQuery. The Basic and VariantQuery feed is already updated.

Additional Context

We should keep showing posts with hidden tags in the search results (when searching on tagname), along with the tags themselves

[1] Feed: Create a Filter Query that sets a foundation to extend the code for future filters

Is this feature related to a problem? Please describe.

As a community member, I want my feed to be refined as possible which includes being able to filter by aspects that relate to me like:

  • showing only content from users and organizations that I'm following
  • showing posts in the languages that I understand
  • hiding "hidden" tags across all my feeds.

Describe the solution you’d like

In order to do this, we need to update the architecture to be as extensible and flexible as possible. The way that we'd like to accomplish it is to think about the feed as a collection of items that we filter by certain parameters in order to get to a final subset of data. We've taken an attempt at creating a POC for this pattern to test its feasibility.

Similarly to the way that we filter billboards, we've implemented a Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery in this POC. In this query we're able to filter by properties properties and re-use the class in other places. The POC linked covers the Latest/Timeframe feed and some other filters like hidden tags and following tags( which should have been following users/organizations).

It may be possible to migrate Articles::Feeds::Basic to use the Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery and I would advise trying that so that we can handle Relevant/Latest/Top in one place. However, I think it might be harder to migrate VariantQuery and ForemLargeExperimental (not really relevant here) to migrate to using this query. Hence we should keep those as is.

TLDR; Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery will be responsible for filtering the feed in order to produce the subset of relevant data.

NOTE: We will not be implementing the "Following" Feed in this issue but rather setting up the foundation of the Query so that adding the "Following" filter becomes a more achievable task.

Definition of Done

  • [ ] Create an Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery that filters the feed to display the relevant result. In this class we want to implement the basic filtering principles like filtering by latest, timeframe, tags, following etc. As mentioned, I've taken a stab of what this can look like here.
  • [ ] Migrate all uses of Articles::Feeds::Latest and Articles::Feeds::Timeframe to use Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery
  • [ ] Attempt to migrate Articles::Feeds::Basic to use Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery.
  • [ ] Migrate Articles::Feeds::Tags to use Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery
  • [ ] Migrate the signed out version of the feed to use Articles::Feeds::FilterQuery for Articles::Feeds::Latest and Articles::Feeds::Timeframe.
  • [ ] Update the routes accordingly to cater for the feedType. / and /explore will need to point to Explore < Relevant

Some small cleanup that will help make the feed more coherent:

  • [ ] Rename Articles::Feeds::Basic to Articles::Feeds::RecommendedBasic
  • [ ] Rename Articles::Feeds::VariantQuery to Articles::Feeds::RecommendedAdvanced
  • [ ] If you see something not aptly names, go ahead and rename it.

Additional Context

We'll need to ensure that this is fully tested both through tests in the codebase as well putting it on some staging env and Qa'ing manually before rolling out.
