nixos-up is a dead-simple install wizard for NixOS. It's the fastest way to get from ISO to working installation.
From the NixOS installation USB/CD:

I tried using nixos-up to install NixOS 21.05 on a VM on VMware Fusion 11.5.7. It blows up as shown in the attached screenshot. The installer ISO is from here: https://channels.nixos.org/nixos-21.05/latest-nixos-minimal-x86_64-linux.iso (linked on this page: https://nixos.org/download.html#nixos-iso).
Hi. This is a great tool. I'm getting an error. I think it is occurring here. The drive I am installing NixOS onto is /dev/nvme0n1.

I know hardly anything about what's going on here. Maybe you have to go from /dev/nvme0n1 to /dev/nvme0n2 and /dev/nvme0n3 instead of to /dev/nvme0n11 and /dev/nvme0n12?

I got the "Special device does not exist" that you explained here. As explained in your comment, I simply ran blockdev --rereadpt /dev/mydude and then reran your command and everything worked thenceforth.
Is there a reason you can't detect this error with a try-catch or something and then run the above command automatically and then continue? Or at the very least can you tell the user to run the command themself?
I recently made a QEMU/KVM VM that had a glusterfs-backed disk using the native glusterfs filesystem connection and it has a device/vendor but no device/model, so the installer failed:

I think it might be easier for people to find their password file if it is in the same directory as configuration.nix.
According to your post-install welcome message

home-manager switchto get going.
However when, after rebooting, I try this command, I get
'home-manager: command not found'
I'm learning nix, but AFAIK, given the configuration.nix file, home-manager is only available inside the configuration file

I follow the readme.md file, running from a live cd inside VirtualBox. This results in the following error:
If I hack out references to home-manager from the nixos-up python script, then it processed OK.
Why it fails, I don't know how to debug. However it hints at making home-manager optional, as this seems to be the cause. (Perhaps consider not installing home-manager for server-installations)
My configuration is a flake. Can you add a flag or something to enable flakes in configuration.nix right away? You just need to add
nix.package = nixUnstable;
nix.extraOptions = "experimental-features = nix-command flakes";
This way I can go straight to git clone ... . and sudo nixos-rebuild switch --flake .#host without worrying about enabling flakes.

I'd love to use your script to install and dual boot NixOS on a machine where Windows 10 is already installed (legacy BIOS). Is there a straightforward way to do it? By looking at the code I suppose not. If that's the case, I guess fully automatizing the process wouldn't be a trivial task either, but what about a simpler case? What if the script let you choose a partition or unallocated space and installed NixOS there instead of erasing the entire disk? Then the relevant options for OS autodiscovery could be automatically included in configuration.nix as per this guide.
Sorry if my suggestions are useless, I don't have experience with this.
