Features

Things that work.

  • Connects through the Web App API without a browser
  • Allows sending and receiving WhatsApp messages in a command line app
  • Allows downloading and opening image/video/audio/document attachments
  • Uses QR code for simple setup
  • Binaries for Windows, Mac, Linux and RaspBerry Pi

Caveats

This is a WIP and mainly meant for my personal use. Heres some things you might expect to work that don't. Plus some other things I should mention.

  • Only shows existing chats
  • Only fetches a few old messages
  • No incoming message notification / count
  • No proper connection drop handling
  • No uploading of images/video/audio/data
  • Not configurable at all (except through your terminal settings)
  • Leaves its config files in your home folder
  • FaceBook obviously doesn't endorse or like these kinds of apps and they're likely to break when FaceBook changes stuff in their web app

Installation / Usage

How to get it running and how to use it

Latest Release

Always fresh, always up to date.

  • Download a release
  • Put the binary in your PATH (optional)
  • Run with whatscli (or double-click)
  • Scan the QR code with WhatsApp on your phone (maybe resize shell)

Package Managers

Some unofficial ways to install via package managers are supported but the installed version might be out of date.

MacOS (homebrew)

  • brew install normen/tap/whatscli

Arch Linux (AUR)

  • git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/whatscli.git
  • cd whatscli
  • makepkg -si
  • yay -S whatscli

Group member names aren't visible in some countries

I recently started using whatscli and it works great for one to one chat(or personal chats) but on group chats don't show even the public names for users(or the names saved in my contact list) as you can see here. I am using whatscli 1.0.7-1 OS: Arch linux Kernel: 5.11.16-zen1-1-zen Installed via: AUR Installed the whatscli instead of whatscli-git

[Feature] configuration

The app should allow for some customization, especially for keyboard shortcuts, ui layout and ui colors.

It should also store its configuration, contact and session files in a proper location, i.e. ~/.config on unix, ~/Library/Preferences on macos and ~/AppData/Local on windows.

For this a configuration management system should be added.

[Feature Request] To be able to manually set names for contacts that dont have a public display name

I'm not familiar with Go so I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement, but it would be nice if the user was able to set names for the contacts that don't have public display names set.

[Feature Request] Add SIXEL support for images on the Terminal

Given that more and more WhatsApp conversations are filled with images or GIFs, I would like to request a feature that would allow the user to be able to see the images on the terminal, inline.

This is different than ASCII support, because:

  1. The idea is that you don't have to press s nor navigate to the message to show the image.
  2. It would be a real Image and not an ASCII one.

What I am thinking is pretty much the same functionality that was implemented with this PR on Rainbowstream (it even has screenshots). I know in Python it would not be hard to implement, but in Go I have n idea how hard it would be. I hope is doable.

Adds support for hex and rgb values in config.

  • improves support for #24 (hex).

Design

  • Adds a struct to represent the config right after loading from the .ini file using primitive types (string, int, bool, etc.)
  • Adds a struct to represent the config with rich types (tcell.Color).
  • Prints any errors in the configuration to the console.
  • config.Color is a simple wrapper around tcell.Color that has a .HexCode method to return a "#RRGGBB" string where needed.
