NCrontab: Crontab for .NET

NCrontab is a library written in C# targeting .NET Standard Library 1.0 and that provides the following facilities:

  • Parsing of crontab expressions
  • Formatting of crontab expressions
  • Calculation of occurrences of time based on a crontab schedule

This library does not provide any scheduler or is not a scheduling facility like cron from Unix platforms. What it provides is parsing, formatting and an algorithm to produce occurrences of time based on a give schedule expressed in the crontab format:

Star (*) in the value field above means all legal values as in parentheses for that column. The value column can have a * or a list of elements separated by commas. An element is either a number in the ranges shown above or two numbers in the range separated by a hyphen (meaning an inclusive range). For more, see CrontabExpression.

Below is an example in IronPython of how to use CrontabSchedule class from NCrontab to generate occurrences of the schedule 0 12 * */2 Mon (meaning, 12:00 PM on Monday of every other month, starting with January) throughout the year 2000:

Extending the expression to seconds

Hello,

is it possible to extend the expression to seconds?
I did it now for myself, but it would be nice if this can be switched on and off in
the original sourcebase.

In the new 3.3.1 release the signed version of the package is empty. The non-signed version works fine.

Job runs multiple times in the same schedule

I'm having a really weird issue with your library. In development the hosted service job on an asp.net core 3.1 web application will be called only once as set in cron schedule (once a day at hh:mm:ss A/PM). However when deployed to production on aws EC2 it runs multiple times. And the number is also arbitrary and not fixed. So like 1 day it will run 5 times, next week 8 and so on. Have you heard of an issue like that? I'm not sure if it could be related to number of cpu cores or something else. However this is happening only in production which is really bothersome. I like your library and want to use it however I'm currently forced to remove and replace it with something else to see if the issue still persists. I was only wondering if you had any similar issue you came across or have someone report to you about it. Please let me know as I'm eager to find a solution to this problem using your library which I really like and appreciate so much.

Access fields in CrontabSchedule?

First, thanks so much for this library! It has been very useful. I apologize if this has been addressed already, but I couldn't find it in any past issues.

Do you have any plans (or objections?) to making it possible to get the fields along with their value range and their CrontabFieldKind from a CrontabSchedule? It looks like CrontabFieldImpl already has all of that exposed as public properties, but I don't see a way to actually access those from a schedule. Sorry if there's already a good way and I'm just missing it.

I was thinking maybe something like

var minutes = schedule.Fields.FirstOrDefault(f => f.Kind == CrontabFieldKind.Minute);

//Or maybe even

Make obvious in code/documentation that cron timing is better with UTC

I think there is value in being upfront that scheduling with cron is based on UTC, and not local time.

  1. Update documentation
  2. Update 'cron' arguments with 'cronUtc'

I can take this up granted the @atifaziz does have free time to take up PRs 😀

CREATE ASSEMBLY [NCrontab.Samples] got error

This what I did and what error I got:

  1. Download the source code and run build.cmd on My Win10 Windows to generate the NCrontab.dll file of dotnet3.
  2. Copy NCrontab.dll to SqlServer2008 Windows, and generate NCrontab.Samples.dll according to your wiki https://github.com/atifaziz/NCrontab/wiki/SQL-Server-Crontab
  3. run sql "CREATE ASSEMBLY [NCrontab.Samples] FROM 'D:\soft\NCrontab.Samples.dll' "
  4. Error：Msg 6509, Level 16, State 31, Line 1 An error occurred while gathering metadata from assembly 'NCrontab' with HRESULT 0x80004005.
  5. Also I run sql “CREATE ASSEMBLY [NCrontab] FROM 'D:\soft\NCrontab.dll”，I got same error
  6. But NCrontab.dll works fine in csi.exe on My Win10 Windows accrording to your readme "Below is the same example in C# Interactive (csi.exe):"

Implementation diverges from classic crontab syntax for "first *-day of month"

In https://github.com/atifaziz/NCrontab/issues/63#issuecomment-637545877 it was stated that

This library only supports the original contrab expression. [...] A first Tueday of a month can only occur on days 1-7, so you could use the 0 8 1-7 * Tue expression to effectively get 8 AM on first seven days of any month that's a Tuesday.

However, according to the crontab manpage:

Note: The day of a command's execution can be specified in the following two fields — 'day of month', and 'day of week'. If both fields are restricted (i.e., do not contain the "*" character), the command will be run when either field matches the current time. For example, "30 4 1,15 * 5" would cause a command to be run at 4:30 am on the 1st and 15th of each month, plus every Friday.

Applied to the first example above, 0 8 1-7 * Tue, that would be "At 08:00 on every day-of-month from 1 through 7 ***and on Tuesday.***", which is also confirmed by crontab.guru.

There's a detailed blog post about this and some funky way to work around it, but these workarounds produce exceptions in this library.

I don't think this is something that is easy to fix without breaking clients, and something that perhaps shouldn't be fixed, since it's more of a quirk in the original syntax. However, for me this was quite unexpected and I wasn't able to find much information about it, so I thought it might be worth pointing out, in case it should be included in the documentation.

Expression of 30th/31th february throws ArgumentOutOfRangeException

Steps to reproduce

Call GetNextOccurence() on a parsed expression of this format: "0 0 30 2 *"

Description

Obviously the 30th/31th february does not exist. Why does this expression even parse succcessfully, when an expression like "0 0 32 * *" does not?

Add common const cron expressions in a class that could be extended.

Adding the follow most common cron expressions:

public const string Hourly = "0 * * * *";
public const string Weekly = "0 0 * * 0";
public const string Monthly = "0 0 1 * *";

Written in a non sealed class in order to make the class extendable.

Change option IncludeSeconds to RequireSeconds

Hiya. Feel free to ignore this PR if it's not what you had in mind.

For my uses, having to specify via an options file whether I want to include seconds in the cron expression or not is a little tedious, and you already have nearly all the infrastructure in place to handle either 5 or 6 tokens automatically. So this is me giving it that one final push. Now whenever RequireSeconds is set true, the parser will throw only if Seconds are missing. Otherwise, if it's false, it'll accept 5 or 6 tokens without issue.

Sorry for all the renaming. The meat-and-potatoes of this change is a new test method, CrontabScheduleTests.CanParseEitherFormatWhenSecondsAreNotRequired, and the slightly modified implementation of CrontabSchedule.TryParse<T>.

This is a minor release that adds a specific target for .NET Standard 2.0. It also adds Source Link support for easier debugging as well as (surprise-surprise) source-linking.

There are no new features or functional bug fixes otherwise.
