Markdown editor for Visual Studio

Download this extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace or get the CI build.

A full featured Markdown editor with live preview and syntax highlighting. Supports GitHub flavored Markdown.

Live Preview Window

The preview window opens up on the right side of the document when it opens.

Every time the markdown document is modified, the preview window will update.

The preview window is automatically scrolled to match the scroll position of the document. As the document is scrolled up and down, the preview window will follow.

Live preview can be disabled in the settings.

Syntax highlighting

All fonts can be changed in Tools -> Options -> Environment -> Fonts and Colors dialog.

GitHub and other flavors

Advanced markdown extensions are supported to give more features to the syntax. This includes pipe tables, emoji, mathematics and a lot more.

Drag 'n drop images

Drag an image directly from Solution Explorer onto the document to insert the appropriate markdown that will render the image.

Paste images

This is really helpful for copying images from a browser or for inserting screen shots. Simply copy an image into the clipboard and paste it directly into the document. This will prompt you for a file name relative to the document and then it inserts the appropriate markdown.

It will even parse the file name and make a friendly name to use for the alt text.

Outlining

Any fenced code and HTML blocks can be collapsed, so that this:

Keyboard shortcuts

Ctrl+Alt+K Inserts a new link.

Ctrl+B makes the selected text bold by wrapping it with **.

Ctrl+Space checks and unchecks task list items.

Tab increases indentation of list items.

Shift+Tab decreases indentation of list items.

Ctrl+K,C wraps the selection with HTML comments.

Ctrl+K,U removes HTML comments surrounding the selection/caret.

Validation

Relative URLs are validated and will show a red squiggly when they can't be resolved.

The errors will also be listed in the Error List.

Control the settings for this extension under Tools -> Options -> Text Editor -> Markdown

Replace WebBrowser with WebView2
Add mermaid graph rendering (mermaid code block rendering, supported by GitHub and GitLab)

The WebBrowser to WebView2 has some technical differences leading to numerous changes

Async over synchronous
WebView2 initializes the backing CoreWebView2 in an asynchronous manner, some init logic is delayed into the loaded event handler
The Markdown parser / document invokes the Parsed event from a background thread. Parsed -> BrowserMargin.UpdateBrowser -> Browser.UpdateBrowserAsync switches back to the main/UI thread.
WebView2 is more restrictive on what content it may load (file hrefs). Virtual path mappings are configured for margin folder and rendered md file paths to reference the css and js files and md file markdown embed references (images).

I ended up restructuring the Browser code a bit, to find understanding.

[x] ~First load fails to render / use scripts - does not seem to have virtual mapped paths useable yet~
[ ] After close, calls on disposed object? (is this new? avoidable?)
[x] Uncaught ReferenceError: mermaid is not defined on open but mermaid renders anyway

Add 'Generate Table Of Contents' Feature

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. This is a new feature request to implement a TOC (Table of Content) markup based on headings in the Markdown document.

Describe the solution you'd like A menu option that will parse the document for headings and create a clickable TOC using bullet markdown and anchor links based on the headings.

Describe alternatives you've considered Currently I use VSCode to generate the TOC using Yu Zhang's markdown-all-in-one extension found here: (Screenshot of TOC is in README) https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=yzhang.markdown-all-in-one

I think this feature would be a very useful addition to this extension.

IDE freezes when opening markdown files

Describe the bug With the previous and current builds, I am unable to open any MD file. The IDE freezes indefinitely until the process is killed. Disabling or uninstalling the extension immediately solves the problem. I have no custom settings for the extensions, just using the defaults for the past several months.

I am happy to collect more information or share any relevant files.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

Install the extension.
Open a .md file.

Expected behavior The file should open.

Screenshots Not applicable.

Additional context Using in Visual Studio 2022 Professional. Extension version 2.0.86.

Would it be possible to add document formatting support (text wrapping) for Markdown documents? This feature was mentioned on your product road map a few years ago and I wanted to add an upvote for it. Thanks for continuing to develop these projects for the community.

Rendered markdown display wrong when using VS with multiple displays with different scale factors

Describe the bug I'm using a SB2 with display scale set to 200%. When running VS2022 (INT Preview) on that display everything looks good:

I also have a 1920x1080 display attached set to 100% scale. If I move the VS instance to that screen, the rendered part of the markdown is then shown twice as big as it should be:

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

Open markdown file in VS that is running on a display with a high percentage scale
Move the VS window to a display with a lower scale
Witness the horror

Expected behavior I would expect the scale/zoom to adjust to the new situation,

Additional context You can make the rendered markdown look better on the 100% scale monitor by manually changing the zoom factor (CTRL+mousewheel) but the vertical scrollbar will remain very big/wide:

P.S. This was also a problem already with the earlier version of this extension but I never reported it...

Escaped char not rendering in preview window.

Describe the bug When using this line in MD file: Be careful regarding the escape char (\) in the settings as thing will abend on load of settings. Note I have two \ in the above line but this editor is being stubborn too.

Complex Markdown does not render in v2.0.123

Describe the bug I have a complex markdown document that was translated from MS Word using pandoc (using gfm format markdown). It is 20K lines (5MB) of markdown and has lots of tables.

Markdown Editor v2.0.111 will render the document, though with some visual problems due to the older (IE?) rendering engine. That said it works reasonably well given the size of the source document (takes maybe 30 seconds to parse, which seems reasonable).

However, Markdown Editor v2.0.123 does not display anything, just a blank white render panel. Other markdown files appear to work just fine.

If I right-click on the render panel and select 'Inspect', it shows an empty document:

There is also no output in the (browser) console.

To Reproduce Unfortunately I cannot share the markdown file that causes this problem because it is company confidential. However, I am willing to help debug if you have some steps I could follow or a way to get debugging info.

Expected behavior Expected behavior is that the markdown would render :)

Additional context I wonder if the version of markdig changed between 2.0.111 and 2.0.123? Or might the mermaid/math support be interfering somehow?

Links with folder-up in relative paths not working anymore

Description Last release (2.0.123) introduced WebView2 and seems to break links with folder up. /../ It's already lost in the generated html and consequently did not get passed through to BrowserNavigationStarting function, which evaluates a wrong path.

To Reproduce Create a relative link to a file like: /../../Project/readme.md

Expected behavior Folder ups should be passed through.

Custom CSS and light/dark mode

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. It appears when using a custom CSS that it completely overrides colors, making it not possible to support both light and dark modes.

Describe the solution you'd like It looks like the MarkdownEditor implementation uses separate style sheets for light and dark. This seems like a reasonable approach for custom as well, so I would suggest checking for "md-styles-dark.css", which if found would be used instead of md-styles.css when dark mode is enabled.

Describe alternatives you've considered I am not that familiar with advanced CSS concepts so I'm not sure how other applications handle this.
